Sharp R-55TS Warm & Toasty Toaster/Microwave Review

In the aesthetics department this item is top notch for anyone going for a stainless steel look in their kitchen. Brushed steel on front, with a black glass window - black metal on sides. Surprisingly, this is more important that I would have thought.
It microwaves well, though at 650W. The controls are convienent, and fast - with a single "one minute" button to save time on reheats. Seems to cook very evenly.
A nice function is the ability to turn the sound off completely - ridding your home of one source of beeps and chirps.
The oven works well for cooking. The toaster works surprisingly well, but it takes close to 3 minutes for a slice of bread. In the toast department, I'd recommend a stand-alone drop-in style toaster.
You can combine cooking and microwaving in steps (thaw then cook, not both at once).

GE Stainless Steel Profile 2.2 Cu. Ft. Microwave Review

GE Stainless Steel Profile 2.2 Cu. Ft. Microwave

I am very disappointed at the poor reliability of this unit. Ours is less than a year old and has failed--now, when attempting to cook, the unit shuts off before the end of the programmed time. Even though the light comes on and the turntable turns, the unit does not heat food. Like others, I purchased this unit based on the recommendation in Consumer Reports; this recommendation didn't pan out. I tried to schedule warranty service and GE is making us wait a week to schedule and their frustrating telephone system does not provide information on where I can take it for service for faster turnaround (and didn't put me in touch with a live representative).
When the microwave oven worked, it worked fine. We replaced a Sharp unit with this one; though this unit has the advantage of a larger capacity, its controls are less intuitive.
Based on poor reliability and poor service, we're certainly not going to buy another GE microwave. We've had good success with GE refrigerators in the past; this is very disappointing. A quick search on the web now reveals that GE microwave ovens are not reliable--many others appear to have similar problems with the magnetrons.
Perhaps this is one reason why GE is looking to sell its appliance business...

Nostalgia RHP-625 Hot-Air Retro Popcorn Maker Review

Nostalgia RHP-625 Hot-Air Retro Popcorn Maker

I really like popcorn. I was totally psyched to use this popper, and the fact that it air-popped made me love it more. It's easy to use and easy to clean. However, from the first use the popcorn went flying everywhere! I placed a good-sized bowl underneath the slide/opening shoot and it caught about 3/4 of the popcorn. The second time, I balanced a very tall popcorn bucket underneath the shoot and still, popcorn and unpopped kernels were flying everywhere. There are a lot more unpopped kernels being thrown than actual popcorn, which is a pain to find and clean up and to get hit with. After the money I spent, I won't give it up, but I think this is the most disappointing thing I bought all year. The popcorn that does land in the bowl is good, I think it has a slight staleness to it, but my friends think it tastes especially fresh. Maybe I'm a little bitter by the time I get to eating it. Also, on the second use, the machine just suddenly stopped. I wasn't sure if it overheated or what (the popper gets extremely hot) but it did begin working again.
I bought this trying to save money and calories versus the microwave kind. I think I might keep an Orville bag of Natural around just in case.

Using hot air instead of oil, this convenient tabletop-size electric popper produces a deliciously healthy, low-fat snack. Its retro style brings back memories of old-fashioned diner-style units of the 1950s. The popper offers a capacity of 3-1/2 ounces of kernels, and pops enough corn to please a family, several dorm friends, or an office crowd. Easy to use and easy to clean, the appliance produces fresh, hot popcorn in minutes. A measuring cap comes included to ensure the proper amount of kernels get poured into the top. Great for fundraisers, birthday parties, and other social gatherings, the 1080-watt ETL-approved popcorn maker measures 7-3/5 by 11 by 15-3/5 inches and carries a 90-day warranty.
